Sayville
residents and firefighters alike should be proud as
one of their own, 41-year old FDNY Lt. Tom Westman,
WINNER of $1 million on the tenth season of
“Survivor: Palau.”
Mr.
Westman, a local resident, loyal husband and father of three, has already proven he’s a winner to the Sayville Township; and with all his fellow firefighting comrades in Brooklyn.
Born on January 4, 1964, in Queens, New York, Mr. Westman attended Archbishop Molloy High School. At Molloy, he was a peer group counselor and a member of the track team; when in 1982, he set a 20-year school record in the pole vault, at 14 feet, six inches. For three years following, he studied history at the State University of New York in Binghamton; but a fireman’s son, Mr. Westman decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the New York City Fire Department in 1985. He has been a member of New York’s Bravest for 20 years and presently is a Lieutenant of Ladder Company 108 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He’s also simultaneously pursuing the completion of his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Queens College.
Self described as gregarious, practical and competitive; the silver-haired Mr. Westman is most proud of his department’s response to the September 11, 2001 rescue efforts. He draws his greatest inspiration from daughter who lost her hearing to meningitis at 18 months old, and after receiving a cochlear implant at the age of two, is now a thriving third grader.
Mr. Westman is an active member of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association and the Fire Department of New York Emerald Society. He is also a member of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Recognized for this continued support by Disabled Sports, USA four years ago, Mr. Westman has returned yearly to volunteer as an instructor to teach disabled veterans to ski.
