Spooky Walk at the Islip Grange
sayville.com - October 22, 2005

The admission was free but the scare came with a price, one  scream per ghoul. The Spooky Annual Haunted Trail held at the Islip Grange started at sundown on October 21, 2005 and screams filled the damp air on Broadway Avenue till 9:30 at night. Each person was encouraged but not obligated to bring a food item for the Sayville Food Pantry and volunteers were there collecting the items.

The Sayville Library held a scary story reading in the Church for the younger attendants, while "decorate your own" cupcake was outside by the picnic tables. Families were welcomed to come and enjoy the Spooky Walk, free hot dogs, drinks and candy corn.

The Spooky Walk started across the Church behind the barns, continued along the wooded area where creepy zombies, werewolves, witches, ghosts and who knows what would pop out of the darkness to scream and growl. At one point zombies came out of a barn to drag away the "innocent victims" back into the barn as others walked by in "horror." The walk ended at the "graveyard" next to Montauk Highway where the tractor ride brought you back at the West Sayville Fire Department Junior Flying Dutchman post. The Sayville Fire Department's Safety House was opened for safety tours and safety packets with Fire Safety coloring books and Find-A-Tot stickers were given to everyone.

From the volunteers on the Spooky Walk to the helpers at the hot dog table the message was clear, you're welcome to have a great Halloween fun but safety comes first.

The event was sponsored by: Town of Islip, The West Sayville Junior Fire Department, The Sayville Fire Department Cadets, Community Ambulance Youth Squad, Sayville United Methodist Youth Fellowship, Holbrook Junior Fire Department, South Shore Community Organization, Sayville Working Association for Youth, Scout Troop 184, Sayville High School Service Clubs, Sayville Library.

One of the attractions on the Spooky Walk (top) and overlooking the picnic tables.
