We were all blessed with a beautiful sunny day for Veterans Day 2005. The Smith-Wever Post #651 activities began November 10, 2005 with an Assembling of the Guard and continued with a Ceremony in Sparrow Park. On November 11he the busy Veterans Day activities included Guard Duty at Sparrow Park from 12:01 am until 11:00 am by Veterans and Active Duty Guardsman to honor our veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice and who are out risking their lives for our freedom today.

Our prayer, this Veterans Day 2005 was for God to keep our active duty veterans safe from harm as they too stand guard all around the world to protect us all from terror attacks.

At 11:00 am the community stood in reverence as wreaths were laid in their honor by the VFW and Cub Scouts of Sayville. NY State Assembly Member Ginny Fields spoke to the large turnout of patriotic citizens of all ages. Other speakers included leaders from the VFW, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans as well as Sayville citizen Tom Westman and John Shultz who just returned from Afghanistan.

Our ceremony concluded with a flyover of three Black Hawk helicopters from the Army Aviation Unit at Mac Arthur Airport thanks to Staff Sergeant Trinette Zizzo, USANG. Members of the Smith-Wever Post #651 then retired the five Flags of our nations armed forces - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and a new US Merchant Marine Service Flag, home to our Landmark Building, circa 1892 the former West Sayville Fire House. Post Commander Jim Kampe, the officers and members of the Smith-Wever Post #651 and the Ladies Auxiliary President Rosemary Kampe and her officers and members extend sincere thanks to all our supporters who donated services, food and their time to host our reception for the community after the events.

God Bless our communities and the United States of America.
