Sunrise Fund – A New Day For Children With Cancer

We would like to ask for your support by becoming a sponsor of the 1^st Annual Sayville Fitness in Gillette Park Health Fair and Benefit.  This event will be held on Saturday December 15^th, in Gillette Park, Sayville, NY.  The fair will consist of Spinners, Tai-Chi, Yoga, raffles, Santa, Toys for Tots, DJ, music and food.  All proceeds will be donated to The Sunrise Fund of Stony Brook Hospital which assists programs for children with cancer and their families.

The Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook was established to raise awareness about childhood cancer and the special needs of such children throughout our communities.  It was also established to raise funds to sustain cutting edge research, develop new treatment facilities and sustain family programs such as support groups, School Re-entry programs and many others.

Krista Ann is an 8 year old with cancer and can often be found in Stony brook Hospital hallways selling calendars to help raise money for the Sunrise Fund program.  Krista’s road has been difficult, and not just because of cancer.  She was born Krista Ann Loscalzo, but removed from her family in 2004 after a Family court decision found her birth mother refused to allow Krista to get chemo for a malignant teratoma, a cancerous tumor.  The cancer had spread to her liver, lungs, and abdomen.  She was placed in foster care after her birth mother of Mastic Beach, called paramedics in August 2004 as Krista hovered near death.  A paramedic testified that he found Krista dirty and paralyzed from the waist down in a filthy home.  Dr. Robert Parker, who heads the pediatric hematology and oncology division at Stony Brook, said Krista’s cancer was then so advanced that she had only a 10 percent chance of survival.  In March, unable to travel to court, Krista was adopted by her foster family in a bedside ceremony at the hospital.  She’s still fighting the disease.  Krista had surgery earlier this year, and faces up to three more months of chemotherapy.

Sayville Fitness and members are organizing this fundraising event for the Sunrise Fund to help raise monies to help children like Krista.
