I know you have heard of it...yoga. It's the thing Madonna and other movie stars and singers are doing. Sting has been doing it for years, professional athletes claim to do it to help their game. Funky yoga postures are photographed and articles are written for fashion magazines. It looks so cool, and hard...out of reach of the normal person here on the south shore of Long Island. You always wanted to try it but......
It's made for pretzel...or it will make you into a pretzel.

Man against the mat.

But why do they all do it?

Why?

Yes, it's going to make you sweat and stretch muscles you didn't even know you had. You will get strong. You will get fit. You will get an amazing work out. You will sleep better than you ever have. But that's the short list of what good it does.

Did you know yoga can combat stress? Fatigue? Depression? Osteoporosis? Obesity? Joint aliments? Allergies? Digestive disorders? Mental disorders? Learning disabilities? Respiratory challenges? A broken heart?

I could go on forever.

Yoga was designed over 5000 years ago to heal. Body, mind and spirit. Yes it's great for the physical self...we get flexible and strong, but it's what goes on under the skin where yoga's true talents are hidden. It rebuilds you from the inside out. Cell by cell. And it does it on all body shapes; thin and stiff, stout and flexible, muscular and athletic, old and young, strong and weak. We will all derive the same benefits from the practice. It will improve and fine tune you and what ails you.

Just like bringing your car to the mechanic for a tune up, we bring our bodies to yoga for the very same purpose. We tune up our human machine. Bending and flexing is like adding a quart of oil to our joints...no rusting and no squeaks! We adjust our timing belt, or our breathing...long and strong breaths to slow down the heart and increase circulation. We stand on our heads to get a look under the carriage...fills us with clarity and focus. We do postures that massage our thyroid...it's like getting 5 more miles per gallon of gas! A great sense of calm comes over you after your first class...an instant form of gratification. You feel good...no...GREAT! And that just after one class.

When yoga becomes a practice that you do with regularity, the benefits increase, the feeling of well being increases, and the effects last longer and longer. Yoga is a strong medicine. But yoga isn't something that can be done by reading about it in a book. Oh, I guess you could, but it's all going to happen for you on the mat. You must show up, learn it, do it, and let it take over...let the benefits come to you. First just a few at a time...sore muscles that make you feel alive, a great nights sleep, a happy disposition for a day or two. But is when you come once a week or more that you will notice changes in places you would never have thought to look. Your depression is gone..and you don't know why. You are less tired, focus more and get things done so you have time for yourself and your family. You stop coughing or sneezing. You feel good about you. People ask if you changed your hair or just cam e back from vacation. They will see the difference...,you will feel it.

The more you do it the more you will realize the benefits.

So that's why yoga, but why now?

Why not now??? Do it for yourself, and do it for the ones that you love. Don't let the pressures and stresses of every day life drain you bone dry. Hydrate your soul and spirit with yoga now. We live but once in this moment never to past through it again. Why waste this precious time feeling less than wonderful? Why take a drug to cheer you up, or a drink to calm you down? Take to the mat and work it all out forever. Let yoga be your Prozac, let yoga be your shrink, let yoga be your medicine, let yoga be your teacher, let yoga change your breath, let yoga be your peace of mind.

That's why yoga now. Find a class and learn how it all happens on the mat!
