Celebrate Women in the Military at Florence B Evans Park

In honor of Women’s History Month, on March 29th the Smith-Wever Post #651 held a ceremony at Florence B Evans Park, behind Crickets on Main St. in Sayville, dedicated to all the women who have served and sacrificed for their country.

The women recognized at this ceremony were:
Civilian, Pam Raymond
God Star Parents, Dawn Esposito and Mr. and Mrs. Pope
Military – Sgt Nicole Zedick, Major Zaijeck , Captain Marcella and Linda O’Neil

A special tribute was made to Lieutenant Florence B Evans, who received the bronze star for conspicuous bravery while under fire during the 1944 Anzio campaign in Italy. She died in Europe while in the performance of her duty on the last day of WWII. She was born in West Sayville on March 11th 1915.

About the American Legion:
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization. A community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55 Departments -- one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.
