Our prices are
fantastic, we're getting known for our
$18 necklace & earring sets (sets start
at $18 and up) and a large selection of
starfish jewelry." With a tightening
economy people still want affordable
luxuries for themselves and for gifts
-and we offer that, cheerfully gift
wrapped for free!" Barbara says.
Seashells, mermaids, and seahorses are
displayed amid boats of all sizes (6" to
6 feet!), and tapestries have been very
popular for wall decor. There is
dinnerware and serving pieces in
seashell patterns, pillows, throws,
trays, frames, the Harbour Lights brand
of lighthouse figurines, and more.
Barbara features a growing number of
local artists and artisans like herself
- "As an artist, I respect what goes
into each creation - both in creative
vision and effort. I like to have local
talent visible in town, particularly if
they share my penchance for reusing old
materials." One featured artisan from
Bayport creates fabulous handmade
seashell frames and wall mirrors for the
store, another handpaints local
driftwood with seashore scenes, yet
another makes seaglass necklaces with
Swarovski crystals. There are two local
photographers, a wood crafter from
Patchogue who makes children's rocking
boats (that Barbara will custom paint
and letter), and a man who carves signs
from 200 year old hemlock planks from a
salvaged barn.
A longtime Decorative Artist & Mural
painter, Barbara hand paints signs and
creates decorative items for the store
from her home studio and often works at
the store at a drafting table in the
back window. She is best known for her
recycled "Storm Buoys tm " -giving new
life to old buoys that wash up on our
north shore beaches after storms with
hand painted boat portraits. "I've
always had a thing for using salvaged
materials over new, I just have always
tried to repurpose for an item that is
on its way to the trash... it adds to
the story which makes the piece so much
more interesting!" She does custom signs
for customers all the time. Current
custom projects she is working on a
kitchen tile backsplash mural, buoys, a
watercolor house portrait, and custom
wood letters for a baby's room to match
the decor. She does furniture painting
and customizes anything for you. "I have
a great ability for color and design
matching, so I can create pieces to
coordinate or match fabrics and
wallpapers for interiors."
Stop in and say hi! The Seafarer Gift
Shop is child & stroller friendly, so
bring the kids. Barbara always has her 3
1/2 year old twins in the store, so
watch out for wayward legos. The twins
love to engage the other children -
which gives other moms time to shop
without distraction. "I grew up in a
family business too, and my kids have
already learned a lot." says Barbara.
